"After" by Anna Todd - Book Review

I've been so busy this past week that I haven't had a chance to read. I spent some time Baltimore with two of my favorite people seeing one of my favorite music groups. So in honor of them, I wanted to review After by Anna Todd, the first book in the After series.

General Information
Paperback: 592 pages
Genre: New adult, romance
Publisher: Gallery Books
Series: Yes - book number 1 of the After series
Todd, Anna. 2014.

What it's about
Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She's got direction, ambition, and a mother who's intent on keeping her that way. But she's barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and a lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she's used to.

But he's also rude - to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does - until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she's never known before.

He'll call her beautiful, then insist he isn't the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her deeper.

Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin's prejudice about nice girls like her?

Unless...could this be love?

Why I loved it
I love Anna Todd! She's no literary genius (think Fitzgerald, Bronte, or Austen), but she sure knows how to write a book. For me, an amazing book is one where I can feel what the characters are feeling and feel myself in the book. I felt so much from all of these characters throughout this entire book. To the point, where I read this book multiple times in a single year. Call me crazy, but I love seeing Tessa evolve from this stuck up sheltered girl to someone who isn't afraid to stand up for herself. To really find out what she loves and the type of person she wants to be. To see her grow. After is a book that I'm going to keep returning to because of how it makes me feel.

This book isn't for everyone, and I realize that - it started as a young adult book, but as the series continues some of the scenes become a bit more adult in nature. Anna Todd even said that she gathered some of her inspiration from 50 Shades of Grey. But I love this story line - no matter how frustrated I get with the characters.

Why you should read it
I think that anyone who enjoys a love story like Beautiful Disaster or any of that nature will enjoy this book. Don't let the length of the book discourage you from picking it up - it really is pretty fast paced. Plus who doesn't love a main male character with a British accent ;)

My rating
5/5 stars
